What problem does this solve?

Re-encode an image and compare actual byte counts to report savings or growth.

Step by step in ViBytes Tools

  1. Load an image and choose a supported output format.
  2. Adjust JPEG/WebP quality; PNG does not use this quality control.
  3. Process and compare original and output sizes before downloading.

Worked example and how to check it

Input: Original file 1000 bytes; output 800 bytes.

Expected result: 200 bytes saved, or 20%. A larger output is reported as growth.

Common mistakes and decisions

Compare quality and byte count separately. Quality 80 does not mean a 20% size reduction. Photos and text screenshots respond differently to encoding; inspect edges and lettering before sharing. If output is larger, keeping the original may be the better option.

Limits before you continue

  • A smaller output is not guaranteed. An already optimized PNG may grow when re-exported.
  • Lower JPEG/WebP quality is lossy, not lossless compression. Browser format support and image quotas apply.

Frequently asked question

Why is the quality control disabled for PNG?

The browser PNG encoder does not use it. Lossless PNG optimization is not promised and output can grow.
