Discount and percentage calculator

Calculate successive discounts, increases and percentage changes.

Enter your values, review the period and select Calculate. Calculations run in your browser; your financial data is neither sent nor saved. The page downloads software resources.

Educational estimates assume constant rates and exclude taxes, fees, inflation and insurance. They are not an offer or financial advice. Loans use a nominal annual rate divided by twelve; this is not the total cost of credit. The savings calculator converts an effective annual rate to the chosen frequency. Contributions occur every compounding period.

Amounts from 0 to 1,000,000,000, up to two decimal places. Rates from 0 to 100%, up to six decimal places. Use a decimal point or comma without thousands separators. Use the same currency for all amounts.

What this tool does

Calculate successive discounts, a percentage of an amount, an increase or a relative change.

Variables and assumptions

The base is the amount to which a percentage applies. A discount reduces the balance; an increase raises it. Percentage change compares the difference with the starting value, which must not be zero for a defined percentage.

How to interpret the result

Two successive 10% discounts on 100 leave 81, an effective saving of 19%. They cannot be added because the second applies to 90. A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall leaves 96% of the starting value: recovering a loss requires a different base.

Educational estimate; not personalized financial advice or a commercial offer.

How to use it

  1. Choose the operation matching your question.
  2. Enter the amount and percentages, or the initial and final amounts.
  3. Calculate; each successive discount applies to the remaining amount.

Verifiable example

Input
Price 100; two successive 10% discounts.
Expected result
Final price 81: an effective 19% discount, not 20%.

Limitations to review

  • Percentage change from zero is undefined.
  • Successive discounts are not added. Ambiguous, non-finite and out-of-range inputs are rejected.
