Open Discount and percentage calculator
What problem does this solve?
Calculate successive discounts, a percentage of an amount, an increase or a relative change.
Step by step in ViBytes Tools
- Choose the operation matching your question.
- Enter the amount and percentages, or the initial and final amounts.
- Calculate; each successive discount applies to the remaining amount.
Worked example and how to check it
Input: Price 100; two successive 10% discounts.
Expected result: Final price 81: an effective 19% discount, not 20%.
Common mistakes and decisions
Discounts use different remaining amounts. Starting at 100, a 20% reduction gives 80; a subsequent 20% increase gives 96, not 100. Percentage-change mode compares initial and final amounts; use it when the percentage is what you need to find.
Limits before you continue
- Percentage change from zero is undefined.
- Successive discounts are not added. Ambiguous, non-finite and out-of-range inputs are rejected.
Frequently asked question
Can I add two 10% discounts?
Not for successive discounts: 100 × 0.9 × 0.9 = 81. The combined discount is 19%.
