OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT advertising to 89 markets. Ads are limited to Free and Go plans and remain separate from the assistant’s responses.

Advertising expands across new markets

OpenAI announced on October 21 that ChatGPT ads were expanding to 26 additional countries, bringing the programme to 89 markets. The company also said more than 100,000 advertisers had used the platform since launch. That is OpenAI’s reported cumulative figure, not an independently audited count of simultaneous campaigns. New markets include Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, alongside countries across several other regions.

For ordinary users, the key question is straightforward: will ads appear in my chats? According to the announcement, advertising is restricted to the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free. Actual visibility depends on the account plan and the countries where the programme is offered.

An ad is not the assistant’s answer

OpenAI says sponsored items are clearly labelled and kept separate from answers, and that advertising does not determine the assistant’s response. The company also says advertisers cannot read private conversations and user data is not sold to them.

For businesses, this creates an additional channel to reach people comparing products or services. For readers, however, it is important not to mistake an ordinary product explanation from an assistant for paid placement.

Where users have control

People can inspect the information attached to a sponsored item, hide irrelevant ads and, where offered, adjust ad preferences. The announcement should be read as a change in advertising availability, not as evidence that every ChatGPT user will see the same sponsored content.
